MIAMI — The post-Thanksgiving travel rush was in full swing Friday morning, with Miami International Airport jam-packed as travelers made their way home after the holiday.
The Federal Aviation Administration estimates more than 55 million Americans traveled for Thanksgiving this year, making it one of the busiest holiday travel periods in years.
At MIA, long security lines stretched through parts of the terminal, and many passengers said they were feeling the effects of the holiday backup.
“I live in Guadeloupe, so I was spending the night here yesterday and I’m taking Air France now to go to Guadeloupe,” said Camille Juban, a traveler headed home to celebrate the holiday a day late but still with family. “All my family is back in Guadeloupe ... so I was just waiting to join them, and I’m going to celebrate this weekend.”
Juban was one of many international travelers connecting through Miami as they made their way home.
For others, Miami was just the start of their holiday plans.
One woman said she spent Thanksgiving in the city and was now traveling to Gainesville, Florida, to see her son and grandchildren.
“I had Thanksgiving with my mom and my whole family, it was wonderful. Then up bright and early to visit my son and daughter-in-law,” she said.
Friday is one of the busiest travel days of the holiday weekend, but Sunday is expected to be the peak, with more than 3.7 million passengers projected to fly nationwide.
