Travelers return to South Florida after Thanksgiving as airport crowds build After spending Thanksgiving with loved ones, thousands of travelers are heading back to South Florida, with airport crowds expected to peak Sunday.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — After spending Thanksgiving with loved ones, thousands of travelers are heading back to South Florida, with airport crowds expected to peak Sunday.

The Federal Aviation Administration estimates more than 55 million Americans traveled for Thanksgiving this year, and many are now returning home.

More than 3.7 million air travelers are expected nationwide on Sunday alone.

At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, travelers have largely experienced smooth operations in recent days.

Layne Paruta, who recently moved back to Florida from Puerto Rico, said returning to family “is always the best.”

Another traveler, Isabella Dimain, 50, said she faced a four-hour delay but was relieved to reach her destination.

“So far, so good, but ask me in a little while when we get through,” said traveler Bill Yameen.

Airports and airlines continue to prepare for high passenger volumes as the holiday travel season winds down.
