PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — The Port St. Lucie police sergeant who was shot in the face on Monday night remains in critical condition.
Doctors say Sergeant Erik Levasseur, a 27-year veteran with the Port St. Lucie Police Department, will need to be transferred to another hospital for a highly specialized surgery.
Additionally, newly released body camera footage shows how six officers were ambushed on Monday night after they responded to what police described as a neighbor dispute involving mental health issues.
Within a minute of police arriving, they said a man armed with an assault rifle shot Levasseur.
That man was subsequently shot and killed by officers.
The injured sergeant is now in a medically induced coma.
He has undergone a second surgery to repair facial injuries, he has a wired jaw, and now relies on a tracheotomy.
No other officers were hurt in the incident.
