FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Raw video and raw emotions were displayed in court on Wednesday as jurors, for a second day, weighed the fate of the 22-year-old man who gunned down Hollywood police Officer Yandy Chirino.
Broward County prosecutors played clips showing why they think the crime was “especially heinous,” meriting the death penalty.
In October, Jason Banegas told the court he is guilty of shooting and killing Chirino, 28, when the officer was responding to a call of a suspicious person checking for unlocked cars.
Banegas was 18 years old at the time.
“The loss of Officer Chirino was not simply a tragic event; it caused a permanent wound,” Hollywood Police Department Chief Jeffrey Devlin testified on Wednesday.
Devlin told the jury during his victim impact statement that the emotional impact on the department of the 2021 line-of-duty death of Chirino is profound.
“Officer Chirino’s death was sudden, violent and senseless,” he said.
Jurors also heard from a medical examiner who walked them through graphic autopsy photos cataloging bullet entry and exit wounds as prosecutors presented evidence of aggravating factors, arguing the shooting was especially heinous, atrocious and cruel.
They also showed the jury the physical evidence, which included the officer’s blood-stained uniform polo shirt.
The jury will have to determine whether life or death is the appropriate punishment for Banegas.
Proceedings were set to continue on Thursday.
