MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A man is back in jail afer police said he allegedly exposed himself and performed lewd acts outside a 72-year-old woman’s home in Miami Beach last month.
Jail records show Nelson Michel Peña, 42, was taken into custody by the Miami Beach Police Department on Tuesday and is facing charges of burglary of an occupied structure and indecent exposure.
The incident occurred on Nov. 23 near the 7600 block of Harding Avenue, where police said the senior discovered the disturbing act after reviewing footage from her Ring doorbell camera.
According to the arrest report, the video showed a man, who police identified as Peña, wearing a white hat, light blue shirt, dark jeans, grey sneakers, and a camouflage backpack approaching the victim’s door.
They said Peña, whose arrest report says he resides at the Camillus House, a Miami-Dade homeless shelter, placed his hands near his groin area and proceeded to expose himself while masturbating on camera.
According to his arrest report, Peña then rang both the victim’s regular doorbell and Ring doorbell before leaving.
The victim exited her apartment to see who was at her door but found no one present, prompting her to check the camera footage, the report stated.
The victim told police that she was afraid for her safety due to her age and the “bizarre” nature of the incident, fearing that Peña behavior “could escalate in the future,” according to the report.
Investigators said they identified Peña through police databases and a previous arrest for indecent exposure from June 1, for which he was later convicted.
They said records also revealed previous arrests for indecent exposure and voyeurism, showing what police described as a “pattern of behavior.”
The victim eventually identified Peña as someone she knew from when he previously lived in an adjacent building with his mother, the report stated.
She told authorities that Peña has an “extensive violent criminal history” and is “known in the area” for lewd and lascivious incidents, which heightened her fear.
Police noted that the building is secured and gated with posted no trespassing signs, and Peña entered and remained on the premises without permission.
They said Peña was eventually located and detained on Tuesday about a block away from the woman’s home.
Police said he was first taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center for evaluation under the Baker Act before being subsequently arrested and transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
He remained at TGK on a $12,500 bond as of Wednesday afternoon.
