MARGATE, Fla. — Chaos broke out in a Margate neighborhood Thursday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. as Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies moved in on a suspect linked to an incident at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino.

“This incident tonight really shows us what dangers our deputies face every single day,” BSO spokesperson Miranda Grossman said.

Deputies with the agency’s Burglary Apprehension Team and Aviation Unit responded to the scene along the 6100 block of Northwest Second Street.

A black vehicle was boxed in by unmarked units, and video from above showed bullet holes in the car’s rear window. Neighbors shared video with Local 10, giving a closer look at the scene.

“An encounter occurred between deputies. And at some point during that encounter, the deputy-involved shooting did occur with the suspect,” Grossman said.

The deputy’s bulletproof vest protected him during the incident. Paramedics took him to Broward Health North in Pompano Beach. His injuries are not life-threatening.

The suspect, a man, was also hospitalized. His identity has not yet been released, however deputies said he is in his 20s and is accused of stealing cash from someone’s hand at the casino.

“I don’t know the condition just yet of the suspect. I know he’s in the hospital and he’s an adult male,” Grossman said.

The deputy who was shot has about 10 years of experience and works with the North Lauderdale district. He is expected to be OK.

Multiple deputies were involved in the shooting, BSO confirmed.

The shooting left many residents shaken.

“It was really scary and those bullets are way bigger than you expect them to be,” a resident told Local 10 News. “This is a really safe neighborhood. You don’t hear about that here.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating, and the BSO Internal Affairs Unit will conduct its own review.
