ISLAMORADA, Fla. — Dashcam video shows what state troopers said is a man from an affluent Washington, D.C. suburb leading them on a 122 mph chase in the Florida Keys in November.
It happened on Nov. 4. Deputies and state troopers said Christopher Brinkley Smithers, 23, of Great Falls, Virginia, crashed a rented Range Rover into a trailered boat in Islamorada after authorities used multiple PIT maneuvers to try to get him to stop.
It started, authorities said, after a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped Smithers in Key Largo after he nearly sideswiped her and was driving erratically.
According to a police report, Smithers was wearing dark sunglasses despite the overcast weather and appeared visibly fidgety and restless.
He now faces multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding. Investigators said he told deputies that he had taken Adderall; no alcohol was in his system.
Local 10 News contacted Smithers’ attorney seeking comment.
