MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Chaos erupted at a Miami Beach market Thursday evening when a man, allegedly intoxicated, damaged property, stole merchandise, and got into a confrontation with police, according to police.
Officers with the Miami Beach Police Department said they responded to Friendz Food Market, located at 901 Washington Ave., just before 8:30 p.m. after reports of a disturbance.
Police said workers told them that 29-year-old Steven Zamora Andrade entered the store and, after being refused alcohol due to his apparent intoxication, became irate and began throwing items from the counter and store shelves onto the floor.
They said Andrade then left the store with $14.99 worth of sporting merchandise without paying.
When an employee locked the front door to stop him from re-entering, Andrade reportedly kicked the door, breaking its hinges. The employee held the door closed until officers arrived, according to the report.
Police said Andrade appeared highly intoxicated and had a cut on his left forearm.
They said he became increasingly aggressive at the scene, spitting on one of the responding officers.
Fire rescue personnel responded after Andrade briefly became “unresponsive but conscious” and transported him to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach before taking him into custody.
Jail records show Andrade is facing one count each of battery on a police officer, corrections officer, or firefighter, criminal mischief, and petty theft.
