MARGATE, Fla. — New surveillance video obtained by Local 10 News on Friday captured the burst of gunfire as Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies exchanged shots with a suspected thief Thursday afternoon.
The shooting happened in the 6100 block of Northwest Second Street. Neighbors said they initially thought the sounds were fireworks.
“All of a sudden I heard pop, pop noises,” said Marcha Mohamed. “I thought it was fireworks at first. I was like, ‘Fireworks in the day?’”
According to a Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, deputies were tracking down 27-year-old Carlos Robinson, who is accused of stealing cash from someone at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.
Deputies located Robinson in a parked vehicle and gave commands for him to get out, authorities said. Investigators say Robinson then fired shots at deputies, who returned fire.
Latonia Todd provided Local 10 News with a photo that she said shows Robinson sitting in a Tesla and talking to a woman moments before the shooting.
“There’s a picture showing him sitting in the car. People had visual eye contact leaving the neighborhood,” Todd said. “He was sitting, chilling in the car, so it doesn’t add up to me.”
Robinson’s condition has not been released. Authorities said he faces multiple charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting into an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Residents described the area as normally quiet.
“It’s very sad that this occurred in our neighborhood,” Todd said. “It’s very quiet here in this community.”
The deputy who was shot has been released from the hospital.
All six deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative duty while the investigation continues.
