FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Humane Society of Broward is encouraging pet adoption this holiday season with a spotlight on dogs and cats in need of homes.
Among them is Simba, a lively 9-year-old dog who was brought to the shelter after his elderly owner passed away and family members could no longer care for him. Despite his age, Simba is energetic and playful.
“He pulls on a leash like a 30-pound or 40-pound dog. I think a walking harness would be best,” said HSBC’s Cherie Wachter. “He just likes to cuddle. He wants to give kisses.”
Simba has a heart condition that requires daily medication, but it doesn’t slow him down.
“He had a consultation with a cardiologist. He had an echocardiogram, so he will need to be on heart medication for the rest of his life,” Wachter said.
The shelter is also caring for cats recently rescued from abandonment. Seventeen cats were brought in, and one gave birth, bringing the total to 22. Among them is Maurice, a 2-year-old cat.
“If you’re a cat lover and really want to make a difference for a feline, now is the time to adopt,” Wachter said.
