MIAMI — Hundreds of families in Miami were all smiles Saturday as the Caring Place handed out toys, food and holiday essentials during its annual Christmas giveaway.
The event provided more than just toys, although the children were thrilled with gifts. Kids also received socks, hygiene kits and food boxes with all the fixings for holiday meals.
A young girl, Riley, said a Furbie topped their wish list.
“We don’t even tell the parents to bring their children because we want them to be the heroes of their own families,” said Lian Navarro, director of community development at The Caring Place. “Santa gives gifts while they’re waiting. They’re joy, they take pictures, they’re laughing. I get very emotional. I’m a mother, so for me, it’s very close to my heart.”
Parents expressed gratitude for the support.
“We’re just going through a lot, and it helps. it just really helps. I’m thankful for it. I can’t put it into words,” said Norma, a parent attending the event.
Since its founding in 1922, the Caring Place has offered year-round assistance to families in need in Miami and Broward County.
“To this day, we have served over 500 families from individuals that live in our centers,” said Navarro. “It’s all about giving them as much joy as we can for this very special season.”
The event brought excitement and a renewed sense of hope.
“I’m very thankful and grateful for all of this and the people that put all this together. It means a lot,” Norma added.
While Saturday marked the organization’s final holiday event of the year, its services continue year-round. The Caring Place encourages anyone who wants to help to reach out and get involved.
