‘I’m a US citizen’: Body cam video shows Border Patrol stop in Keys that made national headlines

Body cam video shows border agents detaining US citizen

KEY LARGO, Fla. — Newly-released body camera video from a Florida Keys deputy shows federal agents after stopping a driver in Key Largo in early December.

For approximately nine minutes in the video alone, law enforcement asks her repeatedly to show identification and unlock the door.

“So the registration on the car is illegal,” a law enforcement officer says. “I don’t know who she is. She’s claiming that she is a U.S. citizen, but she’s not going to identify herself.”

An officer later says, “If you don’t cooperate with these gentlemen, OK, it’s going to get to ― it’s going to something that you don’t want it to get there."

“If you don’t give me your ID, I’m going to break the window,” an officer says.

Eventually, they pull the woman from her car. Cellphone video of the incident made national headlines.

“I’m a U.S. citizen,” the woman is heard saying in that video.

U.S. Border Patrol agents say the traffic stop was part of ongoing enforcement operations nabbing criminals.

They said the woman’s car registration came back to a man in the country illegally ― her husband ― which is why they pulled her over.

She spoke to Local 10 News on the phone the day after the incident and also sent a lengthy statement reading in part, “My body began shaking, and I went into severe anxiety and possibly a panic attack, genuinely afraid for my safety.”

She was never arrested and let go after it was deemed that she was a U.S. citizen.

The woman said her husband was arrested on immigration-related charges in November.
