Grieving Miami-Dade mom says whoever killed son on Christmas Eve targeted ‘the wrong guy’

Woman believes son's killing on Christmas Eve was case of mistaken identity

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — What was supposed to be a merry Christmas turned into holiday heartbreak in northwest Miami-Dade.

A man was shot dead on Christmas Eve at an apartment complex in the Brownsville area.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the area around 2 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a ShotSpotter alert near the intersection of Northwest 63rd Street and 21st Avenue.

Upon arrival, they found a man and a woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported both victims to Jackson Memorial Hospital, authorities said. The man, identified by family members as 24-year-old Moses Mangham, later died from his injuries. The woman is the sister of Mangham’s girlfriend, they said.

Mangham’s mother, Tara Ealey, is now spending Christmas mourning his loss and seeking answers about his death.

“My son is very much innocent,” Ealey said. “He’s not a thug. He’s not a gang banger. He doesn’t do wrong. He works.”

Mangham is the father of 8-year-old and 3-month-old girls and was staying with his girlfriend in the Lincoln Fields complex.

“My heart is ripped,” Ealey said. “It’s ripped.”

The family is certain that Mangham was not the intended target of the ambush. They’re now hoping the suspects face justice.

“I just wish they would turn themselves in or something, because they shot and killed the wrong guy,” Ealey said.

The family believes surveillance cameras in Lincoln Fields may help identify them.

Deputies have been relatively quiet about the case, suggesting they might have leads.
