Holiday travel surge continues at South Florida airports despite season’s end

MIAMI — The holidays may be winding down, but at Miami International Airport, the lines just keep rolling.

Travelers passing through MIA on Saturday morning told Local 10 News the crowds were overwhelming.

John and Emma Rappa, newlyweds headed to Guatemala, said they were prepared for a long wait.

“We are going to Guatemala, going to explore the city. It’s going to be awesome, go to Antigua, yes,” Emma Rappa said.

The couple said flying out of Miami was not their usual plan.

“Crazy, crazy, yeah, awful. We normally fly out of Jacksonville or Gainesville. This is absolutely disgusting, but we are going to make it through,” John Rappa said.

Airports across the country are bracing for heavy traffic over the next seven to 10 days.

The Transportation Security Administration says more than 44.3 million people will be screened by the end of the holiday season — a record number.

Amanda Wiedel, a traveler from the Bay Area, said the Florida weather is a welcome change.

“It’s not that cold in the Bay Area, but it’s cold there, and here it’s sunny,” she said.

South Florida continues to be a major draw this time of year. AAA ranks Miami and Fort Lauderdale as the No. 2 and No. 3 top domestic travel destinations for the 2025 holiday season, right behind Orlando.

Elvio Ciocca, visiting from Europe, said the weather is a big factor in choosing South Florida.

“We have lots of holidays this time of year in Europe, so we like to travel a little bit. It’s pretty cold there, so we like to come to this side of the world,” he said.

But while it may be sunny in Florida, weather problems elsewhere could still cause delays, making travel more complicated for some families.

“Almost a three-hour delay, which is not that bad, but with a baby it becomes a little bit more difficult,” Wiedel said.
