COOPER CITY, Fla. — Cooper City officials have implemented new measures to protect area wildlife, one year after sheriff’s deputies said a group of teens on an all-terrain vehicle ran a gaggle of Egyptian geese off the road, killing 30 of them.
The Dec. 28, 2024 case remains unsolved as of Monday.
New signage and fencing have been installed to restrict vehicle access to an area teeming with wildlife.
Local 10 News spoke to resident Brian Schafler, who discovered the dead geese.
“Me and a lot of the other citizens and residents feel a little bit more protected for the animals’ sake — giving us a little bit more security that this won’t happen again back here,“ Schafler said. ”It is a sanctuary.”
Residents in the community, just off Sterling and Flamingo roads, have been keeping a watchful eye out ever since the incident and there’s even an $8,000 reward available for any information that leads to an arrest.
But despite the reward and clear images released by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, detectives have not yet cracked the case.
“That still doesn’t sit well with (me) and a lot of the other residents of Cooper City,” Schafler said. “They want, you know, answers. They still want justice.”
Schafler said he still believes the case can be solved.
“There (were) multiple people on that vehicle,” he said.
Pedestrian access is now also restricted between dusk and dawn.
The $8,000 reward was still available as of Monday. Deputies asked anyone with information on the case to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
