FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is increasing security in response to the larger crowds of the New Year’s Eve celebration on Wednesday night.
The celebration comes just days after a shooting injured five people outside Dicey Riley’s Irish Pub on Sunday in the Himmarshee Village area.
A gunman opened fire at about 2 a.m. on Sunday near the corner of Southwest Second Street and Nugent Avenue.
The shooting was in the same area where two people were shot in May 2022, and a man was injured during another shooting in 2021.
Christian Ojeda, who was out with friends, and DJ Jordan “Lyrikill” Seitz, who was working, said they heard the rapid gunfire.
“It’s sad because you go with your friends to have a good time. To celebrate life, maybe, and then you didn’t expect that thing to happen,” Ojeda said. “I was so worried. I was running. I was shaking. I didn’t know what to do at that time.”
Saitz said hearing the gunfire was a reminder of the importance of remaining alert and aware of his surroundings.
