MIAMI — Miami police said Tuesday that detectives do not believe the woman shot and killed Saturday night in Little Havana was the intended target. The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
Authorities identified the victim as Desiree Gonzalez, 39, of Miami.
The shooting occurred around 11:50 p.m. near Southwest Third Street and 18th Avenue. Officers responding to the scene found Gonzalez wounded.
They said she was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators remained at the scene late into the next morning, placing evidence markers and searching for fingerprints. Police had initially withheld Gonzalez’s identity until her family could be notified.
Multiple witnesses said Gonzalez was homeless and frequently visited a corner store in the area. A memorial for her was set up Sunday.
Police said detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
