HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Police in Homestead announced the arrest of a man for attempted murder on Thursday.
The incident happened Thursday afternoon along the 300 block of W. Mowry Drive.
According to an arrest report, the suspect, Urbano Berdugo, 38, of Homestead, approached a police officer who was working a special assignment on Krome Avenue and claimed that he had been battered, robbed and was missing a shoe.
Police said officers canvassed the area and found the victim in an alleyway along Mowry Drive with a cut behind his left ear that required stitches, along with other injuries.
According to the report, the victim was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center.
A witness later provided a sworn statement to Homestead police, saying he had been walking in the area where the victim was found by officers and saw two people standing in front of each other.
He said he then saw the victim fall to the ground.
Police said the witness applied pressure to the victim’s injury until a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crew arrived.
According to the report, another witness told officers that Berdugo had struck the victim in the face, and the two then began fighting. She said Berdugo left but then returned, at which time he pulled out a metal object that was concealed in his sleeve and struck the victim in the head with it.
The witness said Berdugo then fled the scene on foot as she assisted the victim.
According to the report, the victim could not remember what happened when he spoke with police.
Officers said Berdugo denied hitting the victim and claimed he was battered by a man with face tattoos.
Police confirmed that the metal object which was alleged to have been used in the attack was recovered and had blood on it.
According to authorities, the victim was listed in stable condition after the attack.
Officers arrested Berdugo on an attempted murder charge and took him to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center just after midnight.
Berdugo is expected to appear in bond court sometime Friday.
