TAMARAC, Fla. — Deputies in Broward County are investigating a shooting that occurred late on New Year’s Eve.
It happened at a home on the 7900 block of Northwest 71st Avenue in Tamarac.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a shooting and upon arrival, found a teenage male suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by Tamarac Fire Rescue where he later died, authorities said.
He was identified as 16-year-old Orlando Wedderburn.
“There was a guy that got shot. He ran and hit underneath one of the trucks there and was bleeding out, and apparently one of the ambulances got him out of here,” neighbor Bob Doptoglon said.
Surveillance video captured the moments paramedics began treating Wedderburn behind a truck after witnesses said he ran across the street.
“I am not sure what he was trying to do -- if he was trying to get attention from the neighbors, I’m not sure,” one neighbor said.
Wedderburn was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but he ultimately did not survive his injuries.
An evidence marker was spotted by a Local 10 crew where the teen collapsed to the ground.
Investigators spent the morning searching for clues from two parked cars outside the home and gathering evidence from inside.
A woman was grazed by a bullet and was treated by first responders at the scene, according to BSO.
“Something happened inside the house and I guess he was hit and came out and was able to make it to my car,” neighbor Carlos Chirimos said.
Chirimos said he was just getting ready to leave to a New Year’s Eve party when deputies told him and his family to get back inside.
“We were in shock,” he said. “You know, I have four kids here.”
And from then to now, detectives have been questioning witnesses and a distraught mother as they work to find out what led up to the shooting and who fired those shots.
Deputies said they detained a man at the scene who “presented a self-defense claim and was later released.”
Following the investigation, detectives will present the case to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
