MIRAMAR, Fla. — Families in an East Miramar neighborhood say they are starting the new year on edge after a man dressed as a security guard was caught on camera stealing packages from homes.
Surveillance video exclusively obtained by Local 10 News on Friday shows the man wearing what appears to be a full security uniform, including a jacket labeled “Security,” a hat and a shoulder badge, as he walks up to a home and takes a package.
The thefts were reported in the area of Southeast 62nd Avenue near Miramar Parkway.
“That’s pretty bold because it looks like he’s looking right at the camera,” one resident said.
Neighbors say the thefts have happened multiple times over the past week.
“At least two or three times this past week,” another resident said, adding that a neighbor behind them was also targeted.
Residents are unsure whether the uniform is legitimate or simply a disguise.
“I think he might be a security guard, probably works somewhere locally,” one neighbor said.
The man’s boldness did not stop at taking the packages. Video shows him opening a box on camera, rummaging through its contents and leaving behind what he did not want.
“He opened the packages, looked through them, then came back and left whatever he didn’t want to take,” a victim said. “He left the box empty. I have the box.”
The victim said the thief took a bottle of cologne that was intended as a gift.
“This guy has no morals,” the resident said. “He just takes what he wants for himself and has no regard for how it affects people around them.”
Marcelo, a longtime resident described by neighbors as someone who looks out for others on the block, said the incidents have made everyone more cautious.
“So every suspicious vehicle that I see stop — even if your thing says Channel 10 — you never know,” he said.
Neighbors say they are keeping a close eye out and encouraging others to report suspicious activity as they hope the thief is caught.
