MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies in Miami-Dade County are searching for the person who was seen on video setting a car on fire last month.
Authorities believe the incident involved a stolen vehicle from Tamarac that was used as part of an illegal street takeover that happened at Northwest 95th Street and 17th Avenue on Dec. 28.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office later released photos showing what they said was an act of arson.
Still frames of the video show a crowd gathered around a white 2017 Dodge Charger with its four doors stripped away.
Someone is then seen setting the car on fire in the middle of the street.
Deputies are now trying to identify the man in the video who was wearing dark-colored clothing, red, white and black shoes and a picture of the Spider-Man character Venom on the back of his sweatshirt.
The vehicle belonged to a woman named Shanna, who spoke to Local 10’s Terrell Forney Monday night but asked to only use her first name.
She said her prized 2017 Dodge Charger Daytona Edition was stolen from her driveway as she slept on Christmas night.
Doorbell camera video showed the thieves starting the ignition and sneaking off in her car.
Days later, when the video of the car on fire went viral, she knew it was her beloved Dodge.
“When I saw it, it just broke my heart and I knew in my heart it was mine,” she said. “You don’t see very many cars like mine anymore.”
It appeared to be a wild night involving dozens of people who essentially shut down the street.
Multiple cars were used in the street takeover and now deputies are searching for the people responsible, but specifically are searching for the man who set the car on fire.
“The doors were stripped, the hood was gone, the trunk lid was gone and they just were beating it and jumping on it, then they burnt it, and you’re like why?” said Shanna. “I hope they’re caught and I would love to see somebody pay (for) it, go to jail.”
There is a $5,000 reward being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
