MIAMI — Police say they’ve arrested three suspects connected with a weekend robbery and shooting in the Miami Design District.
According to arrest reports, the gunman remained “unidentified” when officers took the trio into custody a few hours after Saturday afternoon’s shooting.
Authorities said the victim was shopping at the Supreme store, located at 45 NE 41st St., at around 4:15 p.m. when he was approached by three men whom he recognized “because they are all from the Atlanta area and have had problems with each other (in) the past.”
Police said those men were Jamar McKay, 25, of Mobile, Alabama, Omarion Phillips, 20, of Atlanta, and the unidentified suspect.
Authorities said the victim and the unidentified man “began arguing inside of the store,” and then soon after, McKay “walked behind the victim and ripped the gold chain off his neck and began to run out of the store.”
Police said the chain was worth $22,000.
Arrest reports state that as the victim chased after McKay, the unidentified suspect “ran up” to him and shot him once in the stomach.
The gunman, McKay and Phillips all got into a Mercedes-Benz and took off, police said. They said they later identified the getaway driver as Kevieon Smith, 21, of Riviera Beach.
Authorities said detectives later found the vehicle parked near a dead end at Northeast 10th Avenue and 91st Terrace in Miami Shores.
Police said they saw the suspects get out and enter a nearby home on Northeast 90th Street in an unincorporated area between Miami and Miami Shores.
“A residential search warrant was executed, where the defendants were taken into custody,” arrest reports state. “Also located inside the residence was the (victim’s) gold chain, keys to the offending vehicle and clothing worn during the robbery.”
Police arrested McKay on an armed robbery charge, while Phillips and Smith are each facing a charge of accessory after the fact. Smith is additionally facing a charge of felon in possession of a firearm.
In court Monday morning, a judge ordered that McKay be held without bond. Phillips and Smith were each given a $7,500 bond, but the latter also has pending cases in Palm Beach County.
All three were being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Monday morning.
