Alhadeff, whose daughter Alyssa was killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in February 2018, was elected to the school board that same year.

Since then, she has “been involved in shaping policies, promoting dialogue, and advocating for measures to ensure the well-being and security of students in Broward County Public Schools,” her biography on the Broward County Public Schools website states. “She continues to use her platform to raise awareness, push for legislative changes, and support initiatives aimed at enhancing school safety like Alyssa’s Alert, a panic button to be used in a life-threatening emergency situation.”

Alhadeff told Local 10 that she is backing candidate Sharry Kimmel, who also lives in Parkland and is a longtime educator.

“I’m honored to be endorsed by Lori Alhadeff, who knows my commitment to our students and the responsibility this role requires,” Kimmel posted to her campaign’s Facebook page. “Together, we can strengthen our schools by prioritizing student safety, fiscal responsibility, transparent decision-making as our schools are redefined, and supporting and retaining the best teachers in Broward. Our students, families, and educators deserve leadership rooted in education, and I’m ready to serve.”
