Trump’s Cuba oil message sparks celebration in Miami’s Little Havana

MIAMI — Cuban Americans celebrated in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, waving Cuban flags and banging pots and pans outside the Versailles Restaurant after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would cut off Cuba’s supply of Venezuelan oil.

In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump said the United States is ending oil shipments to Cuba and cutting off financial support.

“There will be no more oil or money going to Cuba -- zero!” Trump wrote.

Many residents expressed hope that the move could signal the end of Cuba’s dictatorship, however, some said they were uncertain whether Trump would follow through.

“I don’t know what he’s going to do. He’s unpredictable,” one resident said.

U.S. Rep. Carlos Giminez also responded to Trump’s statement, issuing a message in support of the president’s stance.

“Do not test the resolve of the United States. With President Trump’s leadership, we will help the Cuban people reclaim their freedom, rebuild their homeland, and take back their beautiful island from the communist narcoterrorist thugs who destroyed it.”

Cuba’s leader responded with a statement rejecting the U.S. position, saying Cuba is “a free, independent and sovereign nation” and that “nobody dictates what we do.” The statement concluded by saying the country is “ready to defend the homeland to the last drop of blood.”

Trump’s message to the Cuban government also included a warning to make a deal “before it’s too late.”
