HIALEAH, Fla. — Before a packed house of dignitaries, current and former local leaders and residents, Hialeah swore in its new mayor.
Elected at 27 years old, attorney and former Councilman Bryan Calvo, 28, made history on day one as the City of Progress’ youngest mayor ever.
He spoke in interwoven English and Spanish.
“I stand before you humbled and honored to be sworn in as your mayor,” Calvo said.
The Hialeah native and graduate of Harvard and Florida International universities wasted no time, signing three executive orders just minutes after his swearing in.
The first eliminated city-funded pensions for city council members, the second created a Cuba business advisory task force.
“So it was important for me, personally, to hit the ground running, signing those three executive orders today, tackling contracts to make sure that every dollar coming into the city is being spent correctly on behalf of the residents, tackling the issues that we’re seeing now with what happened in Venezuela a few weeks ago, how that affects also Cuba, which is a communist dictatorship that has impacted this region for more than 67 years,” Calvo said.
