DeSantis touted a victory when it comes to navigating the state’s complex history with property insurance.
Property insurance has been a crisis for many homeowners in recent years, but he says the situation is turning around.
During his news conference Monday, the governor announced that the legislative reform that we saw back in December 2022 is working, that the rates are coming down, that private insurance companies are returning to Florida, and that homeowners have more options when it comes to the marketplace.
“In Florida, 17 new companies have entered the market for home insurance,” DeSantis said.
“What that has done, as of January of 2026, there have been 83 filings for rate decreases and 100 filings for no increase, including one of the largest insurers in Florida Peninsula -- an 8% decrease that they filed for. Now, people say when these filings come in, people say, ‘Well, I didn’t see that.’ Well, yeah, because it’s the renewal when it takes effect. And so, so that will happen.”
There’s also a lot of conversation centered around Citizens Property Insurance, which is Florida’s so-called insurer of last resort.
They have dropped policies to now about 400,000 homeowners, and many say that homeowners may still be up against high costs when it comes to moving to the private insurance market since they might be forced to pay up to 20% more of an increase.
The governor says that this is all around a good situation for the state because it limits risk and minimizes liability.
