MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 26-year-old man was arrested Thursday after Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies said he pepper sprayed some of his family members along with deputies who responded to the scene.
According to MDSO Detective Angel Rodriguez, deputies responded to the home in the 13200 block of Southwest 275th Lane at about 4:30 p.m. in reference to a man who had pepper sprayed multiple people during a family dispute.
Rodriguez said four deputies were also pepper sprayed by the suspect, Miguel Jomolca, after arriving at the scene.
An arrest report states that the deputies had ordered Jomolca to drop the pepper spray, but he refused and sprayed two deputies directly in the face.
One deputy then deployed their Taser at Jomolca, but he still continued to spray deputies in the face, the report stated.
According to the report, after a “prolonged struggle” with Jomolca on the kitchen floor of the home, deputies were eventually able to take the pepper spray away from him and place him into custody.
Deputies said one victim told them that she believed Jomolca was having a schizophrenic episode and, because she was scared, she hid a large kitchen knife that he had previously concealed.
She said Jomolca became increasingly agitated once he noticed the knife was missing and pepper sprayed her in the face, authorities said.
Deputies said he also pepper sprayed two other women who tried to intervene and stop him.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials, seven people were assessed by paramedics and treated at the scene, but no one was transported to the hospital.
Jomolca was arrested on charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and aggravated battery.
As of Friday morning, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed his bond as “to be set.”
