Large group gathers for ‘Bikes Up, Guns Down’ ride

Large group out for Bikes Up, Guns Down MLK Day ride

MIAMI — Riders were out on Monday for their annual “Bikes Up, Guns Down” event.

It takes place every year in South Florida on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Monday afternoon, Local 10’s Roy Ramos observed a large group on bicycles, motorbikes and four-wheel vehicles located on Northwest Eighth Avenue in Miami.

The group said their message was to promote positivity, and not violence.

In addition to Dr. Martin Luther King, they said they are also honoring the life of former Bikes Up, Guns Down organizer Dwight Wells, who was fatally shot late last year.

“The message we are trying to promote is we are not bad kids, we are not gangsters, we just like to ride,” said participant Zeke. “Today we popped outside just to remember MLK, we know all that he did back then for us. We are also riding for Dwight Wells, also known as Screamer. That’s who we’re all riding for today.”

Zeke said the plan was for the riders to remain in the area and obey all laws, adding, “That. lowkey, is the plan. We plan to ride out soon, go ride and just care of business.”

City of Miami police officers were also on scene, monitoring the group.
