Local 10’s Magdala Louissaint met a family member outside Jackson Memorial Hospital Sunday who said their loved one’s health is very delicate.

According to Miami Fire Rescue officials, six construction workers working on the I-395 bridge were thrown 30 feet.

“They all have different types of injuries,” Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Pete Sanchez said. “They all fell or toppled over about 30 feet, so we’re talking about extensive bodily injuries — potential fractures to limbs and potential head injuries.”

A representative from the Florida Department of Transportation said workers were performing construction formwork during a concrete pour when the incident occurred.

FDOT officials added that it did not involve the bridge structure or any part of the roadway that is open to traffic.

According to Sanchez, Miami Fire Rescue’s Technical Rescue Team had to use intense equipment to help save the six construction workers.

Thankfully, a crane already onsite helped first responders reach one of the workers.

“They were working on top of what’s called a cap that lays on top of this beam on top of this pillar, and it seemed like they were working and they were stuck between some bars and some pieces of wood, which is where we cut that individual out,” Sanchez said.

The Florida Highway Patrol, FDOT and OSHA are investigating the construction accident.

FDOT released the following statement to Local 10 News Saturday morning:
