Sunrise police said Shane Ball, 36, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the shooting and faces one count of premeditated attempted murder.

On July 14, 2024, investigators said the victim told them that he had gone to Classic Billiards, located at 4569 North Uniiversity Dr., after work to relax and had no conflicts with anyone.

While seated at the bar, the victim observed Ball speaking to the bartender and “talking crazy,” claiming he had “caught 35 bodies,” a slang term commonly used to mean having killed multiple people, according to the report.

The victim and another patron asked Ball to calm down, but he continued ranting before stepping outside.

The report stated that other patrons later reported that Ball pulled out a gun earlier in the night, although the victim did not see it himself.

When Ball returned to the bar, he “removed a handgun from his waistband, and cocked it while continuing to rant at patrons,” police wrote. They said Ball left the bar shortly after in a dark-colored vehicle.

About 20 minutes later, as the victim drove home, police reported that Ball’s car cut in front of him and collided with his front bumper. They said Ball then fired multiple shots, striking the victim in both arms, and caused him to crash into a light pole near the 2400 block of Pine Island Road in Sunrise.

The victim told police he had not provoked the shooting and was unsure how many people were in Ball’s vehicle.

Investigators said they identified Ball through surveillance video at the bar, license plate reader data, credit card receipts, and multiple eyewitness identifications.

Witnesses said they had seen Ball at the bar on previous occasions and described him as generally “friendly,” but believed that he was intoxicated on the night of the shooting, consuming Hennessy mixed with Red Bull, according to the report.

When interviewed by detectives, Ball acknowledged being at the billiard hall but repeatedly claimed he could not remember the events, citing reasons including “family members casting spells on him, the CIA erasing his memory,” and “prior mental health issues.”

Regarding his gun, Ball told investigators, “If I do something like that or pull out my gun like that, I’m letting you know I’m gonna spank you,” the report stated.

He also stated that displaying a weapon is a reaction when someone is “talking s---” or making him “feel some type of way,” which could lead him to challenge the other person to “come outside,” the report stated.

Police said they eventually recovered two .40-caliber Smith & Wesson guns from Ball and three spent shell casings from his vehicle. Forensic testing confirmed that a projectile recovered from the scene was fired from one of his guns, authorities said.

They said one witness reported that the shooting occurred approximately 40 minutes after Ball had displayed the gun and told the victim, “You wouldn’t know what to do if somebody shot at you,” while also boasting he had “35 bodies under his belt.”

As of Friday, Ball was being held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail.

A motive for the shooting is unclear at this time.
