MIAMI — An unattended piece of luggage prompted an evacuation at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Cellphone video showed passengers being cleared from Concourses G, H and J as deputies moved people out of the area. One traveler flying to Brazil said police arrived shortly after 5 p.m. and ordered everyone to leave.
“We arrived at 5 o’clock and I was going to São Paulo,” traveler Cor said. “Then the police came in and said you need to get out as soon as possible.”
Sheriff’s officials said the evacuation was ordered after unattended luggage was reported in the departures area. A large crowd of travelers waited outside the terminal with their bags while the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad investigated.
“A lot of police cars, and then we heard it was a bomb squad,” said Maria, a traveler flying to Sweden.
Others worried about missing their flights, especially with many already canceled or delayed because of a nationwide winter storm.
“We were ready to leave to Italy and now we are here,” another traveler said.
By about 7:30 p.m., deputies gave the all-clear, saying the area was safe. Travelers were allowed back inside the terminal to continue on to their flights.
