Sunny South Florida can’t escape travel troubles caused by monster winter storm

Several flights cancelled at MIA as winter storm causes travel trouble

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — The wave of cancellations continued Monday at Miami International Airport as a monster winter storm moving across the country caused chaos at many of the nation’s airports.

“When we left Dallas, we already knew stuff was hitting the fan,” Levi Ehrman, who is visiting from the Texas city, said.

The massive storm already led to the cancellation of nearly 100 flights at MIA as of late Monday morning.

It followed a difficult Sunday where more than 200 flights were grounded due to snow and ice, forcing travelers to scramble for backup plans.

“Every flight we saw on the board, it was like ‘cancelled, cancelled, cancelled,’” said Anniina Ehrman. “It’s been interesting. We woke up at 5:00. They’re all obviously long flights, long connections, long layovers.”

The Ehrmans are trying to make it home to the Lone Star State after returning from a cruise, but their flight was suddenly cancelled after they had already arrived at the airport.

“We’re going to Knoxville, then Dallas. We’ll see what happens,” Levi Ehrman said. “If that gets cancelled, it’s whatever, we’ll just figure it out.”

One woman flying back to Austin, Texas, voluntarily cancelled her Sunday flight, fearing the weather would delay her trip.

“My friends and I, we did a preemptive strike and we decided to cancel our flight for yesterday because we didn’t think it was going to come into Austin,” she said. “They had said that the ice storm was pretty bad and it was going to last until today.

“We wanted to just, kind of take care of the situation before it took care of us.”

While many airlines are attempting to re-book passengers on connecting flights, the widespread impact of the storm means it could take days for some travelers to reach their final destinations.

“We have flexibility,” Anniina Ehrman noted, “but I know not everyone does.”
