FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A man accused of killing a 19-year-old asked a judge for a second time to be temporarily released from jail, and it only took minutes for the judge to say no.
In his maximum-custody inmate jumpsuit, 20-year-old Larry Lamar Smith, who has been charged with second-degree murder, was back in court Wednesday while awaiting a ruling from a Broward County judge.
Last week, Smith’s lawyer filed a motion to temporarily release him from jail for a second time so that he can meet his baby, who was born on Monday.
Smith was visibly upset with the judge’s ruling.
He was arrested last summer, accused of killing Myrah Zeigler near a Fort Lauderdale Airbnb.
Zeigler’s mother said she was happy with the judge’s decision.
“My heart was racing, I was relieved,” said Alacia Ford-Barron. “He needs a reality check, he really does. So I’m glad he’s not able to leave out this jail house because we have to think about everybody else.”
This isn’t the first time Smith has asked to be released from jail.
Last August, he was temporarily released to attend his father’s funeral, granted ten hours of freedom with an ankle monitor.
That ruling angered Ford-Barron.
“I felt like the system was failing me,” she said. “I couldn’t trust Broward County for a moment, but today you all changed my mind, today that there can be a difference and there will be justice to come.”
Smith’s next hearing is scheduled for April.
