The victim, 20-year-old Aileen Martinez, was a cosmetology student at the Aveda Institute, located at 4186 S. University Drive, just north of Griffin Road.

Davie police said 25-year-old Jose Orpi, Martinez’s ex-boyfriend, fatally shot her shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday in the school parking lot before turning the gun on himself. He was hospitalized and later died.

Police emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing.

“No additional information will be released at this time due to the ongoing and active nature of the investigation,” a spokesperson with the Davie Police Department wrote in a statement to Local 10 on Friday. “Detectives are continuing their work to ensure all facts are accurately established and appropriately reviewed.”

Close friends described Martinez as a passionate musician who performed with bands across Florida and dreamed of opening her own salon.

Her family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover funeral and burial expenses.
