Death of Dade Correctional Institution inmate draws law enforcement investigation

Death of Dade Correctional inmate draws law enforcement investigation

MIAMI — Miami-Dade sheriff’s crime scene investigators were seen Friday night at the county’s correctional institution, and Local 10 News was the only station there to witness their arrival.

When asked why investigators were on scene, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said to ask questions to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

FDLE hasn’t responded to multiple requests for comment.

The visit comes days after inmate Ariel Gutierrez died at the facility.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Gutierrez died Wednesday at 5:42 a.m. and that his closest family member was told.

Dade Correctional Institution has faced scrutiny before. In August, several Florida correctional officers were arrested, accused of beating inmate Christopher Castro and attempting to cover up the incident.

Records show those officers face charges including battery on an inmate, tampering with evidence, failure to report abuse and perjury.

Online jail records list Gutierrez’s current release date as deceased.

The 58-year-old was serving an 11-year sentence and had spent years in and out of prison. His most recent conviction stemmed from 2019 burglary and grand theft charges.

FDLE has not provided additional details about Gutierrez’s death.
