MIAMI — Miami police arrested a 98-year-old man who they say is accused of stabbing a relative who was caring for him.
Authorities say Juan Perez attacked the woman at a home near the 240 block of Southwest 18th Court, in the city’s Little Havana neighborhood, just after 2 p.m. Thursday.
According to an arrest report, officers responded to the home just after 2 p.m., receiving a call about a stabbing.
The report stated that officers provided first aid to the victim, who was bleeding heavily, before she was transported to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital by Miami Fire Rescue.
Police said the victim told them that she came to help her mother-in-law when Perez allegedly “poked” her in the back.
They said he then swung a knife at her, striking her left forearm.
Shortly after, a struggle ensued, during which the victim was able to grab the knife and alert her mother-in-law for help.
A neighbor also intervened, calling Perez’s name, which allowed the victim to grab and secure the knife until officers arrived, according to the report.
Perez told detectives that he and the victim got into an argument that escalated when she allegedly grabbed him. Police say the two are in-laws and have known each other for about 42 years.
Investigators later found three kitchen knives in bushes outside the home.
Jail records show Perez is facing one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Authorities didn’t say what the suspect and victim were arguing about before the attack.
He was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was set at $7,500. He was also ordered to stay away from the victim.
