PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Video shows a Pembroke Pines Police Department officer stepping in to save a man who was choking inside a local Cuban restaurant last weekend.
Police said Officer Ed Hooper and other officers were alerted Saturday by staff members at La Caretta, located at 301 N. University Dr., that a man inside the restaurant was choking.
Employees and bystanders had already begun performing back blows and abdominal thrusts when Hooper took over.
Video captures the moments that Hooper continued the lifesaving maneuvers until the man’s airway was cleared.
Police noted the techniques used to save the man’s life are part of standard CPR training.
As Valentine’s Day weekend approaches, the department is encouraging residents to learn those same skills by signing up for a free CPR class hosted by their partners at Pembroke Pines Fire-Rescue.
More information about the classes is available at www.ppines.com.
