Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies said the suspects, Javarus Manuel Hernandez and Frederick Walter Pickens Jr., both 20, were injured in the shootout, as was the security guard.

According to an arrest report for Hernandez, the incident occurred just before 4 a.m. Monday at the Regency Pointe Apartments, located at 1901 NW 79th St.

Deputies said the security guard called 911 after the shooting and said he had disarmed and pinned down one of the suspects, later identified as Pickens.

When deputies arrived to the area, they found Hernandez injured in the parking lot of a nearby Church’s Texas Chicken.

Deputies said they soon discovered that the suspects had been casing the apartment complex, looking for unlocked vehicles, when they tried to open the driver’s side door of the security guard’s personal vehicle.

According to the report, the security guard was sitting in the front passenger seat at the time and got out of the vehicle to ask the suspects what they were doing on the property.

Deputies said the suspects then robbed the victim at gunpoint and also searched his vehicle.

At one point, the suspects entered the victim’s vehicle and tried to drive away, but the victim was able to disarm Pickens and shoot him several times, authorities said.

Deputies said the victim then exchanged gunfire with Hernandez, who fled the scene on foot after being shot.

According to the report, during the exchange of gunfire, the victim was shot in the back of the head.

The victim and both suspects were transported as trauma alerts to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

According to the report, Hernandez provided some kind of admission to detectives about the robbery and shooting, however his exact statement was redacted from the publicly released report.

As of Tuesday morning, online jail records show he was being held at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center, although his mugshot was not yet showing.

He faces charges of armed robbery, armed carjacking and attempted murder.

While Pickens is listed as Hernandez’s co-defendant in the arrest report, he was not showing up in online jail records Tuesday and may still be hospitalized.
