KEY LARGO, Fla. — A 31-year-old Key Largo woman was arrested Tuesday after deputies said a 2-year-old child was found wandering barefoot near U.S. 1.
Jail records show Adriana Maripaz Vazquez Cano is facing one count of child neglect without great bodily harm.
According to Adam Linhardt, a spokesperson with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Tarpon Basin Drive at approximately 7 a.m. after multiple witnesses reported seeing a distraught child crying and walking near traffic.
Deputies said they located the child’s home nearby and found the front door open with no one inside. Authorities said the home “appeared dirty and disheveled.”
They said Vazquez Cano arrived shortly afterward and told deputies she had “only intended to be gone for a few minutes.”
Linhardt said the Florida Department of Children and Families was notified, and Cano Vazquez was taken to jail.
No injuries were reported and her bond information wasn’t immediately released.
