MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Miami-Dade County commissioners did not make a decision regarding their Urban Development Boundary on Wednesday.

This all surrounds a text amendment request from Kelly Tractor to build a new headquarters outside the county’s UDB.

Last year, commissioners approved the request, granting the heavy equipment dealer the right to build on 246 acres west of Sweetwater, where the Dolphin Expressway ends off of Northwest 137th Avenue.

This is land that includes wetlands that are supposed to be protected.

“I’m head of those departments and I sat down with Kelly and their representatives about a year ago, last February, and during that conversation that was never discussed,” said Miami-Dade County Chief Utilities and Regulatory Services Officer Roy Coley.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava vetoed the text amendment, saying it should have been a UDB proposal, which would require more data and specifics.

“It isn’t only that it’s outside the UDB,” said Levine Cava. “It’s that it didn’t follow the proper process to allow us to do a full evaluation.”

Kelly Tractor CEO Christopher Kelly and attorneys representing the company were shaking their heads at this in the crowd while surrounded by more than a hundred of their workers who were there to support the new HQ.

“We weren’t trying to hide anything, we’ve been transparent the whole time,” said Kelly. “I respect the mayor. We want to do what’s best for our environment and our community. There is that balance between development and protecting the environment that’s been important to us since day one with this application.”

Kelly says the administration staff told them to use this type of application and is looking forward to moving ahead with the process after years of planning.

The next meeting where the UDB will be discussed will be on March 19.
