NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A North Miami Beach man repeatedly burglarized a neighbor who lived a few houses down from him and his ankle monitor gave everything away, according to police. He now faces nearly 30 charges.
According to an arrest report, both the suspect, Kovelman Williams, and the victims live on Northeast Sixth Court, on opposite sides of 169th Street. Both victims had been away since December, attending to their second property in New York.
Williams, 37, is accused of taking full advantage of their absence.
North Miami Beach police said they responded to the victims’ home on the afternoon of Jan. 28 after receiving a report of an open front door. They said they then determined the home had been burglarized by someone entering through the kitchen window.
While investigators were at the scene, police said they saw Williams “stopping and stepping onto the front lawn of the property of the (victims’) residence and staying there for a brief moment.”
They then saw him “concealing his face with a hoodie while observing officers,” police said; he then took off on a gray scooter.
Authorities said they stopped him about a block away and he gave his name, date of birth and address and claimed he was a “confidential informant” for the police department, “which was later discovered to be false.”
Police said they noticed Williams’ ankle monitor and he agreed to let them take a picture of him. He then left.
According to court records, it appears Williams was out on bond in separate burglary cases out of Miami and North Miami Beach.
They said that about 15 minutes later, a Cash For Cars tow truck arrived at the victims’ home. The driver said a man had called him seeking to sell a Toyota and that he had the title. Authorities said the driver agreed to meet at the home to complete the deal and tow the car, not knowing that it belonged to the burglary victims.
Police said on Feb. 9, they obtained ankle monitor logs showing Williams at the victims’ home multiple times over 11 separate days from Jan. 3 to Jan. 25.
They said the victims conducted an inventory and found that more than $93,000 in Rolex watches and gold and silver collectors’ coins were gone, as well as $650 cash, a vehicle title and a gray scooter.
According to the arrest report, the victims also determined that Williams caused about $5,000 in damage to the home.
Police said they used Williams’ ankle monitor to track him to Northeast 167th Street and 15th Avenue on Thursday to take him into custody.
They said he admitted to the burglaries. According to a separate arrest report, officers searching Williams’ backpack also found two stolen debit cards.
As of Friday, Williams faced 15 burglary charges, 11 grand theft charges, two petit theft charges and one count of unlawful possession of a stolen credit or debit card.
He was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond listed as “to be set.”
