HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — The City of Hallandale Beach hosted a ceremonial street renaming this week to honor its “sister city,” Sderot, city officials announced this week.
The event held Wednesday afternoon formally designated Southeast Fifth Street as “Sderot Way,” highlighting the longstanding relationship and shared resilience between the two communities, city officials said.
City officials said the dedication underscores Hallandale Beach’s ongoing solidarity with the people of Israel following the events of Oct. 7, 2023.
Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper was joined by Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi and Deputy Mayor Hava Nachshonov for the ceremony.
Together, they commemorated the partnership between them and reflected on Sderot’s path toward recovery and renewal.
“We stand together with our sister city, Sderot, and will continue to show our solidarity as Israel protects its homeland and rebuilds a bright future,” Cooper said in a statement. “This dedication represents our commitment to unity and our heartfelt support for those affected by this tragedy.”
The observance began with the unveiling of the new “Sderot Way” street sign and a memorial marker at the intersection of Southeast Fifth Street and Fourth Avenue.
Following welcoming remarks from Cooper, visiting leaders from Sderot shared reflections on their city’s resilience and ongoing rebuilding efforts.
City leaders say the renaming serves not only as a symbolic gesture, but also as a lasting reminder of the bond between the two cities.
