Northeast braces for major snowstorm as Miami flights face dozens of cancellations

Miami International Airport feels ripple effects of looming northeast blizzard

MIAMI — As several major Northeast cities brace for a potentially historic snowstorm, travelers are trying to get out ahead of the weather -- including some at Miami International Airport.

Charlie Lagone said he left New York last-minute.

“We took the last flight out of LaGuardia Airport, New York. Everything else was cancelled,” he said.

At Miami International Airport, departure boards showed multiple cancellations to New York and New Jersey as airlines adjusted schedules ahead of the storm.

“It’s very, very congested and tiring,” said traveler Evelyn Firley.

Airport officials reported more than three delays at MIA and nearly 70 cancellations tied to the Northeast. Nationwide, FlightAware projected nearly 5,000 cancellations by Monday as the system moves in.

New York City is expected to bear the brunt of the storm. Zohran Mamdani said the city has not faced a storm of this scale in the past decade and warned of major disruptions.

“The state of emergency closes streets, highways, and bridges of New York City for all traffic,” Mamdani said.

Forecasters say parts of the city could see up to two feet of snow by Monday morning, with significant impacts to air travel across the region.

For Roseanne and Lagone, the focus now is on their cruise -- grateful they made it out in time. The bigger question is what conditions they’ll face when they return.
