MIRAMAR, Fla. — Months after Local 10 News first reported serious safety concerns inside the playgrounds at Miramar Regional Park, visible repair work is now underway. The playground areas remain closed to the public while crews address the deteriorating equipment.
In November, Local 10 documented widespread rust, corrosion, exposed metal, deteriorating vinyl coating and sharp edges within reach of children. Parents who spoke with us at the time questioned whether the playground should have remained open given the visible condition of the equipment.
The City of Miramar acknowledged in an email then that the playground structures were more than 20 years old and showing “signs of aging,” but maintained the equipment was safe and inspected daily. City officials also stated that full replacement of the playground equipment was planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
When Local 10 revisited the park this week, we found the playgrounds closed and significant work in progress. Several pieces of the older equipment that previously showed heavy rust and corrosion have now been removed. Crews were observed sanding and repainting metal structures and replacing damaged components. Areas that once showed exposed rust and worn coating appear to be undergoing refurbishment.
Photographs taken during our latest visit show that some of the most deteriorated sections highlighted in our original report are no longer in place. Fresh paint is visible on portions of the remaining structures, and construction materials are staged throughout the playground area.
At the time of our initial reporting, parents described children coming into contact with rusted surfaces. One parent told Local 10 her child had rust stains on her hands after playing. Others questioned whether the playground should remain open in that condition. Social media posts from community members had raised similar concerns months before our November story aired.
The City has not yet clarified whether the current work is part of routine maintenance, an accelerated repair effort following public concern, or a broader interim solution ahead of the planned 2026 replacement project.
Local 10 has reached out to the City of Miramar for specific details about what repairs are being performed, the cost of the work, whether any safety inspections prompted the closures, and when the playgrounds are expected to reopen. We have also asked whether the timeline for full replacement in 2026 remains unchanged.
As of publication, we are awaiting the City’s response.
