1 playground reopens at Miramar Regional Park as city responds to Local 10 News questions

MIRAMAR, Fla. — Months after Local 10 News first exposed serious safety hazards at Miramar Regional Park, repair work is finally underway.

Playground Two has reopened, while Playground One remains closed as crews continue refurbishment.

The City of Miramar, through Public Information Officer Debron Campbell, told Local 10 News that the work is part of “ongoing preventative maintenance efforts” on playgrounds more than 20 years old.

“These upgrades are part of ongoing preventative maintenance efforts to ensure safe, functional, and well-maintained recreational spaces for residents,” Campbell said.

He added that the project is not related to an emergency condition and is being carried out on an expedited schedule to minimize disruption.

“Playground One will reopen once the remaining replacement components are delivered and installed, which is expected shortly,” Campbell said.

But the timeline raises eyebrows.

Local 10 first documented widespread rust, corrosion, exposed metal, deteriorating vinyl coating, and sharp edges within reach of children in November.

Parents questioned whether the playgrounds should have remained open, and social media posts highlighted similar safety concerns. The day after our story aired, the City closed the playgrounds for repairs.

During a recent visit, Local 10 observed crews sanding and repainting metal structures, replacing damaged components, and removing several of the most deteriorated pieces featured in our original report.

Fresh paint is visible on remaining structures, and construction materials are staged throughout the playground area.

City officials had previously acknowledged the playgrounds were showing “signs of aging,” but maintained they were safe and inspected daily.

At that time, the City also said full replacement of the playground equipment was planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
