HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — A 79-year-old man is facing an arson charge in connection with a 2024 fire at his mobile home in Hallandale Beach, according to police.
Investigators said Robert Wezyk, then 78, set the fire after being evicted.
Police said the blaze happened on May 22, 2024 at Wezyk’s home in the 300 block of Northeast Fifth Street, within the Seville Mobile Home Park.
An arrest report from the Hallandale Beach Police Department states that prior to the fire, he told someone that he was being evicted and when asked what he was going to do about the trailer, told the person that he was “probably going to burn it down.”
Police said Wezyk used gasoline to ignite the blaze and was seen on surveillance footage from a nearby mobile home “carrying a handheld sprayer.”
The report states that later that day, Wezyk spoke to another person about the fire.
“He did not appear concerned about the fire and advised (redacted) that it must have been the steak he left on the stove,” HBPD Detective Christopher Grieco wrote.
Police arrested Wezyk, who now lives in Hollywood, on a first-degree arson charge on Wednesday.
He appeared in court on Thursday, where a Broward judge ordered he be held without bond.
As of late Thursday morning, Wezyk was being held in the Broward Main Jail.
