CORAL GABLES, Fla. — A Coral Gables man was arrested Friday by the Florida Department of Financial Services after investigators said he fraudulently cashed his deceased father’s workers’ compensation checks over several years.
According to an arrest report, Todd Luis Calderin, 44, was his father’s caretaker and managed his father’s workers’ comp benefits.
Authorities said his father, Joe Calderin, had sustained a serious back injury while employed by the city of Hialeah and was receiving benefits totaling more than $800,000 over his lifetime.
Joe Calderin passed away on Aug. 1, 2021, but investigators said Todd Calderin continued to cash the checks, totaling $63,408, without notifying the insurance company or the city.
The Department of Financial Services’ investigation included witness interviews, photographic evidence, and recorded statements.
They said Todd Calderin admitted to taking the funds and initially promised to repay the money, but he failed to formalize any repayment agreement or make payments.
Jail records show he is facing one count each of organized scheme to defraud more than $50,000, second-degree grand theft between $20,000 and $100,000, forgery of a check, and uttering a forged instrument on a check.
As of Friday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.”
