PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — After a series of recent Local 10 News investigations raised questions about his residency, tax exemptions, conduct and business dealings, Pembroke Park Mayor Geoffrey Jacobs responded by publicly mocking a reporter’s weight.
On Friday, Jacobs posted a photo of Local 10 investigative reporter Jeff Weinsier and wrote, “Jeff you should consider spending more time in the gym then you do in those restaurants you are always harassing.. #weightwatchers #jennycraig #ozempic.”
The post did not address the substance of the reporting.
Local 10 recently reported that Jacobs and his wife claimed significant homestead related tax exemptions, including a total and permanent disability exemption, on a Fort Pierce property located more than one hundred miles from Pembroke Park while he served as mayor.
Following that reporting, the exemption was removed. The taxable value of the Fort Pierce home is now listed at 509,000 dollars. Jacobs was paying zero. The reporting also raised questions about whether Jacobs met residency requirements under the town charter while claiming those exemptions.
Local 10 also reported that Jacobs’ legislative aide was placed on paid administrative leave. Town officials have been reviewing her job responsibilities and the scope of her role, including questions about why she resides in Alabama while holding a municipal position connected to Pembroke Park government.
Rather than provide documentation disputing those findings or publicly addressing the records cited in the reporting, Jacobs chose to post a personal insult directed at the reporter covering the story.
In August 2023, Fort Lauderdale attorney Tonja Haddad completed a 17 page investigative report commissioned by the town. The investigation included interviews with 13 witnesses and reviewed documentary and video evidence.
The report found what it described as a consistent narrative regarding Jacobs’ behavior and concluded that he created a hostile work environment. According to the findings, messages attributed to Jacobs would be considered racist, homophobic, sexist, antisemitic, and in some cases very threatening.
Employees described the workplace as hostile and toxic.
Jacobs has also publicly referred to Vice Mayor Musfika Kashem as “Cupcake” and called Commissioner William Hodgkins “stupid and incompetent.” In June 2023, Jacobs was formally censured by fellow commissioners.
A separate report from the Broward Office of the Inspector General concluded Jacobs unlawfully used more than ten thousand dollars in taxpayer money to charter a yacht for a 2022 holiday party.
In November 2023, Jacobs was charged with a misdemeanor for misusing 911 after falsely reporting that then Mayor Ashira Mohammed was armed during a meeting. Jacobs has denied wrongdoing and has said he believes he has been politically targeted. The charge was later dropped.
The mayor’s decision to publicly mock a reporter’s weight follows documented findings of a hostile work environment, formal censure by fellow commissioners, an inspector general report concluding unlawful use of taxpayer funds and ongoing scrutiny over residency and tax filings.
Public officials are expected to respond to scrutiny with transparency and professionalism. The social media post did not address the questions raised in public records, investigative findings, or independent reports. Instead, it focused on personal ridicule.
In response to Jacobs’ post, Weinsier said, “Personal attacks are not leadership. They are deflection. When you cannot respond to scrutiny, you attack the messenger.
“That may play well on social media, but it does nothing for the residents you were elected to serve. I will continue asking questions. I will continue reporting facts. I will continue doing my job professionally. I suggest you focus on doing yours.”
Local 10 News continues to follow developments involving the mayor and the town of Pembroke Park.
