After 52 years of friendship, man steps in to save his mentor’s life

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — More than 50 years ago, John Wilson says his life changed forever.

At 12 years old, growing up in New Jersey without a father, his mother signed him up for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program.

A nearby high school teacher, Charlie Sharpe, became his Big Brother -- a mentor and eventually a lifelong friend.

“I think the typical relationship lasts about two years, two and a half years,” Wilson said. “This one has lasted for 52. The man saved my life.”

Earlier this month, Wilson and Sharpe planned to reunite in Saint Maarten. But when they landed, Sharpe’s wife noticed something was wrong.

Sharpe, now 79, was rushed to a local hospital.

“When I got there, he was seizing. He did not look good at all. I thought that was it,” Wilson said.

Doctors diagnosed a brain bleed and multiple seizures. Sharpe also developed sepsis from an E. coli infection.

Stranded on the island for nearly a week, Wilson paid $30,000 out of pocket for an air ambulance to bring Sharpe to South Florida. He is now being treated at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.

“The fact of the matter is insurance won’t pay for it,” Wilson said. “It really leaves you no other option, so I paid out of pocket.”

Sharpe is expected to undergo surgery for a hole in his heart. After that, Wilson hopes he can return home, though recovery could take time.

“He’s got a long road to recovery. He needs rehab, and I don’t know how long that’s going to be,” Wilson said.

Doctors are also trying to determine the cause of an unknown mass found in Sharpe’s brain.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help with medical expenses.
