BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — A judge on Saturday set bond at more than $3.5 million for a woman accused in a deadly crash following a police chase Thursday afternoon on Florida’s Turnpike.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies were assisting Coconut Creek Police Department with a stolen vehicle investigation out of Fort Lauderdale when the driver of a stolen pickup truck struck a marked BSO unit and then a marked Coconut Creek police unit near Sample Road and the Turnpike shortly after 4 p.m.
Authorities said law enforcement officers began chasing the vehicle after it entered the southbound lanes of the Turnpike. Florida Highway Patrol troopers assisted in the pursuit, which ended near Mile Marker 58 in a crash that left one person dead.
Video from the scene showed twisted metal scattered across the roadway, with a sedan crushed and a white Ford F-250 slammed into a concrete barrier.
“Both the BSO deputy and Coconut Creek Police officer whose units were struck by the stolen vehicle were taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries not expected to be life-threatening,” a BSO spokesperson said in a news release. “Following the conclusion of the incident on the Turnpike, deputies arrested an adult female who was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries.”
Authorities said FHP troopers conducted two precision immobilization techniques, also known as PIT maneuvers, to apprehend the driver, who they said “posed an imminent threat of physical harm to the public and law enforcement officers.”
The suspect was later identified as 52-year-old Anna Giza.
Investigators said Giza provided multiple names and at least two different dates of birth and claimed she did not know any other personal information when she was detained.
Jail records show she is facing charges including murder by another while engaged in a felony, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing with serious injury or death, grand theft auto and resisting an officer without violence.
Although Giza did not appear in court Saturday, her total bond was set at $3,510,500.
The fatal crash shut down all southbound lanes of the Turnpike from Sunrise Boulevard to Interstate 595 for hours, causing miles of backups and heavy congestion on surrounding roads.
